Does Truth Still Matter in Today's World?
Does truth still matter in an age of TikTok trends, shifting values and norms, moral relativism, and religious pluralism? Should we stand against changing cultural currents and pursue absolute truth? Or is it easier to accept the idea that ‘I’m okay, you’re okay’? History really does repeat itself. We can learn a lot from looking back in time, looking at the meaning of life, and looking forward to influencing the future we want to create. What do I mean by this? Jump in a time machine with me, and let’s look at the past because the issues we see today are not new… and there is much for us to learn. But why bother? Why spend all this effort? Like anyone else, I would like to grab the latest coffee concoction, put on my VR headset, and enjoy a night of entertainment. John Piper warns in his book “Don’t Waste Your Life” that one of the worst things that can happen to someone is that they look back on their life and say, “I lived for meaningless things”. Don’t let that be you.
Lessons from History
Questions about truth may seem modern, but they are not new. Throughout history, societies have wrestled with the nature of truth. Some of the greatest minds in history—Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle—dedicated their lives to seeking truth, shaping the foundations of Western thought. The Greek philosophers of the first century grappled with issues we see today: the meaning of life, the source of truth, and social and interpersonal issues. The search for truth fueled other significant eras in history, such as the French Revolution, the Protestant Reformation in England, and the Great Awakening in America. Men and women gave their lives to pursue truth and share it with others.
What Does This Mean for Us Today?
First, don’t waste your life. Find the meaning of life. Where is it? Look around you. The beauty and complexity of creation point us to a Creator. That Creator reveals Himself in the Bible. If you have never opened a Bible, I encourage you to do so. If you have not read your Bible lately, open it again. Take a look at Genesis chapters one and two. The whole purpose of our lives is found in those first two chapters. “In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1a). From the very first verse, we have a purpose for our lives. God pursues you. God loves you. God has a purpose for you!
Purpose, Hope, and Transformation
Our Creator God gives us purpose in life. We live for Him. God gives us hope in life. We live in a fallen world, and bad things happen, but in the end, God will make everything right. God gives us purpose. When we live by the principles found in the Bible, life makes more sense and gives us a higher purpose with a life full of meaning that transcends our circumstances. How do I know? Because I have experienced that in my life, and I have seen the Bible transform my life and other people’s lives too. And not just on the surface, but deep down. The Bible speaks to my soul.
Since God is our Creator, He knows what is best for us. The Bible details what is best. As the author Elizabeth George says, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Let your good be better, and your better be best”. If you want the BEST in life, read the Bible. Study the Bible. Live by the principles found in the Bible. The truths of life are found in the Bible. The truth is worth it. God’s truth transforms your life.
